Jan personally assesses each property before developing a tailored proposal based on the land, local conditions, existing garden, indigenous planting opportunities, wildlife potential and your vision for the space.
Depending on the project, The Wild Botanist can then oversee the process from design through to plant sourcing, installation and aftercare.
Wildlife Garden Design
A wildlife garden isn't simply a garden with a bird feeder. It is a living environment designed to provide the food, water, shelter and habitat that wildlife needs to visit, feed, breed and thrive. We use indigenous planting and considered garden design to create spaces that encourage birds, butterflies, pollinators, bats, beneficial insects and other local wildlife - while remaining beautiful, functional spaces for people to enjoy. Depending on your property, this can include consideration of: Indigenous trees, shrubs and flowering plants • food and nectar sources • shelter and habitat • natural focal points • rocks and timber • water elements • planting layers • garden layout
Garden Rewilding
Rewilding doesn't necessarily mean starting again. Often, an established garden already contains mature trees, useful structure and valuable planting. The opportunity lies in understanding what should stay, what could change and what is missing. The Wild Botanist assesses your existing garden and develops a practical approach to introducing greater biodiversity through indigenous planting, habitat creation and thoughtful changes to the landscape. This could mean replacing unsuitable planting, introducing indigenous species, increasing planting diversity, creating new habitat or reconsidering areas that aren't currently working.
Coastal Indigenous Gardens
The KZN North Coast has its own climate, landscape and remarkable indigenous plant life. Your garden should belong to it. We create planting schemes and garden designs using indigenous species selected with the property's particular conditions in mind. Rather than choosing plants purely for appearance, we consider where they will grow, how they will work together and what they can contribute to the wider garden ecosystem.

Site Assessment
Jan personally visits your property to understand the existing garden, landscape, conditions and opportunities - as well as your vision for the space.

Proposal
A tailored proposal is developed around the needs of the property, incorporating planting, layout, natural focal points and other design considerations where appropriate.

Implementation
Once approved, The Wild Botanist can oversee the practical implementation of the design, including sourcing plant material, hardscaping requirements and coordinating specialist subcontractors where required.

Aftercare
A wildlife garden evolves. Ongoing advice and support can be provided as required to help the garden establish, mature and come to life.
